Our members offer support to the military community in many different ways, whether that means helping military families get through long deployments or hosting send-off and welcome home events. The VFW knows how important troop support is because all of our members have been there.

Military Appreciation Program (MAP)
The Bridge Between VFW and Active Military
Our Military Appreciation Program (MAP) is the outstretched hand between the local VFW and military community, offering support around the world.
Since 2005, MAP has sponsored events supporting more than 3.4 million service members and their families, creating connections that last long after the uniform comes off.
🤝 Adopt-a-Unit Program
A large part of MAP is the Adopt-a-Unit program, providing VFW Posts the opportunity to adopt hundreds of military units around the world. Adopt-a-Unit's goal is to develop supportive relationships with units before, during and after deployments to help deliver the vast network of resources the VFW has available to the military.
🌍 Global Support Network
VFW Posts across Alabama and around the world have adopted military units, providing care packages, morale support, family assistance, and a connection to home. Whether units are training stateside or deployed overseas, VFW members are there every step of the way.
🎉 Events and Recognition
From deployment send-offs to welcome home celebrations, VFW Posts organize events that honor service members and support their families. These gatherings strengthen the bond between veterans and active-duty personnel while showing our communities the importance of military service.
📅 2025-2026 MAP Grant Application Now Open
The 2025-2026 MAP Grant application period is now open. Any events held prior to the opening of the MAP grant will not be reimbursed with the 2025-2026 funds. The MAP Grant application can be found on the National Programs Dashboard.
