Before Memorial Day in 1922, we conducted our first poppy distribution, becoming the first veterans' organization to organize a nationwide distribution. The poppy was soon adopted as the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in the United States, as it remains today.
The VFW became the first veterans' organization to conduct a nationwide poppy distribution before Memorial Day. The red poppy quickly became a powerful symbol of remembrance for fallen service members.
During our encampment, we decided that VFW "Buddy"® Poppies would be assembled by disabled and needy veterans who would be paid for their work to provide them with financial assistance. This decision created a program that continues to help veterans to this day.
Disabled veterans at the Buddy Poppy factory in Pittsburgh began assembling VFW Buddy Poppies. The designation "Buddy Poppy" was officially adopted at that time, creating a lasting legacy.
In February 1924, we registered Buddy Poppy with the U.S. Patent Office. A certificate was issued on May 20, 1924, granting our organization all trademark rights under the classification of artificial flowers in the name of Buddy.
No other organization, firm, or individual can legally use the name Buddy Poppy.
Of Supporting Veterans Through the Buddy Poppy Program
The VFW Buddy Poppy program compensates disabled and needy veterans who assemble the poppies, providing them with meaningful work and financial assistance. Every poppy you see was crafted by the hands of a veteran.
Proceeds from Buddy Poppy distributions provide financial assistance in maintaining state and national veterans' rehabilitation and service programs, ensuring that veterans receive the care and support they deserve.
The Buddy Poppy program partially supports the VFW National Home, which provides housing and support for military and veterans' families in need. Every poppy purchased helps families in crisis.
Hear from those who assemble the mighty little flowers and learn about the impact this program has on veterans' lives. Watch our "Behind the Buddy Poppy" video to see the dedication and craftsmanship that goes into every single poppy.
Join us in honoring our fallen heroes and supporting veterans in need. Host a Buddy Poppy drive in your town, or have your local government issue a special proclamation recognizing the importance of the Buddy Poppy program.
